Shom Orders Velocity Probes
01 Aug 2002
Petersfield-based Ocean Scientific International has supplied the French Naval Hydrographic & Oceanographic Service (SHOM) with two sound velocity probes designed by Applied Microsystems of Canada as part of its smart sensor range of high-precision systems.
Using an acoustic time-of-flight sensor to measure sound velocity and with a depth capability of 5000m, the systems will be used to provide accurate depth data in support of SHOM's five multibeam echosounders aboard survey vessels by measuring speed of sound at their transducers. Similar systems have been in service with SHOM since 1998.
