UK Government Puts Wind In Mayflower's Sails

The British Government has given UK energy company Innogy the go-ahead for a 90MW capacity wind farm at North Hoyle, off the Welsh coast. The project will provide the first work for the Mayflower Resolution, a specialised wind turbine installation vessel under construction in China for High Wycombe UK based offshore energy contractors Mayflower.

The 'Mayflower Resolution' is due to enter service in February 2003, when the £20m contract for Innogy subsidiary National Wind Power will see it install up to 30 turbines some 7.5 km off the north coast of Wales.

Mayflower holds letters of intent for some £200m of additional work for Mayflower Resolution. Greenpeace and American energy company TXU recently announced plans for a massive £30b wind farm off the coast of East Anglia.

Mayflower will share the £74m North Hoyle contract with Danish turbine manufacturer Vestas Celtic Wind Technology. It is only a year since Mayflower diversified into offshore energy from its base in bus manufacturing but it is already close to signing another two wind turbine installation contracts worth £40 million.
