It's Good to Talk In a Force 8 Gale

The British Army Powerboat Team, supported by radio distributor Icom UK Ltd, circumnavigated Britain this summer in only ten days with 13 young soldiers crewing two 6.5m Humber Ocean Pro RIBs. Some of the team had never set foot in a RIB before training began for the 2,397 mile voyage.

The RIBs of Exercise Rigid Lion set off from Southampton on 7 August and travelled clockwise around mainland Britain with refuelling stops in Cornwal, Liverpool, Leith and London. It is believed this is the first time a novice crew had ever attempted the passage running against all prevailing winds and tides and without the help of a 'mother craft'. The soldiers were at sea for up to 12 hours each day, starting as early as 0130 hours and covering up to 250 miles by mid-afternoon. The boats were able to communicate via an Icom supplied IC-M503 marine VHF transceiver and DS-100 DSC safety units in each boat. The equipment not only ensured the RIBs could communicate with one another but also allowed them to speak with HM Coastguard and the emergency services in order to provide a high level of safety should an emergency arise.

The Icom radios proved to be of critical importance during the crossing of the Bristol Channel.

An hour after leaving the north coast of Cornwall, the team's RIBs were subjected to Force 6, gusting 7 with occasional gale Force 8 winds and associated breaking waves of up to 6m.

One RIB was broached by a huge wave that hit on the starboard bow, forcing it onto its port tube at 90 degrees and causing a catastrophic failure of the A-frame extension.

The Icom units were protected against total submersion to IPX-7 and continued to work despite the swamping, enabling the boats to continue communications in the dreadful conditions.
