New Parliamentary Act Helps Port Authority Build Economy
01 Dec 2002
The Milford Haven Port Authority Act 2002 will come into effect at the end of February next year and will allow the Authority greater freedom to invest and develop business to the benefit of the local and regional economy.
The new Act provides the Authority with the powers to issue General Directions to shipping, after consultation, and will enhance the ability to regulate, advise and control shipping to contain risks with greater flexibility than at present.
Secondly, the Act changes the Authority's constitution and accountability to enshrine in law the principles of good practice in its statutory responsibilities which are already in use.
Finally, the Act will give powers to the Authority to develop its business and make investment by a variety of means and for any purpose, so long as the investment brings economic, social, cultural or environmental benefits to Pembrokeshire without prejudicing its core conservancy responsibilities.
