Silt Curtains Please Malta Divers

Netherlands based Oil Control Systems (OCS) have provided silt curtains to protect a famous diving area in Malta from siltation originating at the nearby construction of a ferry teminal extension.

The Malta Maritime Authority, under pressure from a powerful local divers' lobby and the indigenous tourist industry, demanded silt curtains be deployed to protect Cirkawwa Point.

Through an agent in Malta, OCS provided 300m of Ro-Clean Desmi booms and 4m deep silt curtains which the company manufactures itself in Rotterdam.

The Polidano Group of Malta is the main contractor in works underway to lengthen an existing jetty, doubling its capacity enabling it to accommodate two ferries simultaneously. New from OCS and demonstrated last month at Rotterdam Maritime is Bilge Bosun, an easily stowed packet measuring as little as 18cm by 18cm which, when placed in an oil or petrol polluted bilge, absorbs up to 27 times its original volume in pollutant, changing the molecular structure of the offending substance to reduce both odour and risk of fire.
