'Blade Runner Two' Soon to Catch the Wind

The NEG Micon Rotors factory at St Cross, Newport on the Isle of Wight is set to produce more than 1,500 wind turbine blades next year as the global market for wind energy continues to accelerate.

Planning consent has recently been obtained to make five sailings weekly between the Marine Transfer Facility on the River Medina and Berth 33 in the Port of Southampton. From Berth 33 100% of the South Cross factory's output is exported to Europe, India, Japan, Australia and the USA, contributing to the 13% share of the world market held by Danish parent company NEG Micon A/S.

The factory's output has thus far been transported across the Solent on MTB Blade Runner One a 45m long vessel which was purposedesigned and its build project managed by Poole UK based John Pattisson Associates. Now, with wind turbines and their blades getting larger and the factory's output on the rise in response to global demand, another vessel, MTB Blade Runner Two, is under construction at Aveco Teesside.

It will be 75m long and capable of carrying blades up to 65m long compared to the 40m blade length capability of Blade Runner One.

Due to be commissioned in February of next year, Blade Runner Two is designed to operate within the same environmental parameters as its smaller sister ship. It will draw a minimal draft and produce a minimal wash.

Propulsion is again provided by Scania engines and Schottel pumpjets. With heavier scantlings and a 'Solent' bow, the new vessel should be capable of crossings in weather up to Force 7 and swells approaching 2m. Capable of carrying heavy moulds and other wind turbine products, Blade Runner Two will be manned by a crew of three and cost over £1m to build.

John Pattisson Associates have again designed the vessel and are project managing its build. The marine engineering consultancy is also carrying out minor upgrades for NEG Micon to the navigation aids and fendering at the Marine Transfer Facility on the Isle of Wight.
