Personal Location Debut at SASMEX
01 Feb 2002
The new all round one piece, manually activated L6 flashing light meets stringent IMO requirements for lifejacket lights. By incorporating new electronic circuitry in the manufacture of the L6, McMurdo has significantly reduced its size, making it easier to fit to both new style and existing lifejackets. The compact size also reduces the storage space required.
The L6's high visibility white light flashes at between 50 to 70 times per minute. It can be easily activated manually using a pull ring, even with cold or gloved hands. Once operating, the L6 will continue to flash for around eight hours.
The unit comes complete with an easy to fit backing clip and a choice of backing plate or crocodile clip fixing arrangements is available, enabling rapid attachment to any type of lifejacket. Rapid installation also reduces labour costs for commercial users such as passenger ships, where the L6 will be purchased as a retrofit product to replace out of date or non-compliant lights.
The L6 has a storage life of five years using a lithium manganese dioxide battery and can withstand storage temperatures ranging from -30ºC to +65ºC. It will operate in conditions ranging from -1ºC to +30 ºC.
The L6 measures 65 by 50 by 40mm and weighs 70g. It is approved to IMO Resolution A689 (17) as amended by MSC 54 (66) and MSC 81 (70).
The first range of Personal Location Beacons (PLBs) to feature both in-built GPS and 406MHz satellite technology are now available from McMurdo.
The Fastfind and Fastfind Plus series of PLBs maximise the chances of being found at sea.
In an emergency, the Fastfind Plus transmits an alert signal to geo-stationary Cospas-Sarsat satellites which is forwarded to a rescue co-ordination centre within typically three minutes.
The built in GPS receiver will provide latitude and longitude co-ordinates to give a position on average within 30m anywhere in the world. The standard Fastfind version makes do without the GPS but the same 121.5 MHz frequency transmitter as used on Fastfind Plus provides a signal for rescue services to home in on.
