Successful Launch for New Lifeboat
01 Feb 2002
Danish shipbuilder Mulder & Rijke has received orders for 70 of its recently introduced partially enclosed PELB 95/150 lifeboats. Six of the 9.5m long, 150 passenger lifeboats have already been delivered to the Italian ferry operator Tirrenia for its recently launched Bithia ferry, which now operates on the Sicily - Sardinia - Tunisia routes.
Meanwhile, a further six vessels are awaiting delivery to its sister ship Jonas, a ferry that will eventually ply various routes around the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The Italian shipyard Fincantieri Cantieri Navali has also placed orders for 50 boats.
Ten will be delivered for Holland America Line's Zuiderdam, currently under construction and due to enter service early next year. A further ten craft have been ordered for Zuiderdam's sister ship Oosterdam while other orders will be delivered to Rotterdam's Van der Giessen yard for Brittany Ferries.
