Humberside Hails Arrival of 'Pat M'
01 Jan 2002
Humber Work Boats celebrated 30 years of successful operations with naming and blessing ceremonies earlier this month for its new self-propelled dipper dredger Pat M. Releasing the champagne was Pat Morgan (Pat M), wife of Humber Work Boats' Managing Director John Morgan.
Pat M is the 72nd dipper dredger to leave the Netherlands facilities of Shipyard De Donge but is the first to be self-propelled.
All but one of the previous vessels remain in service, suggesting the versatile Pat M will be a fixture in the UK dredging and marine construction markets for many years to come. The 44m long vessel features a wide 14m beam and 400 tonnes stability which will enable a 100 tonne construction crane to occupy her spacious deck.
Aiming primarily for port and harbour dredging works, the vessel can also undertake pipelayng and removal works, marine construction and demolition projects and coastal protection works. Classed BV 1-3/3, Pat M can operate up to 30 miles offshore and completed her maiden voyage from Shipyard De Donge to Humberside in less than a day. Mobilisation efficiencies of the self-propelled dredger will prove a major enticement for prospective clients.
Propulsion via two 440hp Cummins main engines, each driving a 360º HRP thruster, took the vessel to 8.5 knots on its crossing from the Netherlands.
In a unique system designed by Shipyard De Donge, hydraulics driven by the 1,000hp Cummins engine powering the 130 tonne Komatsu excavator also operate the three 26m long spud legs, giving the dredging operator fingertip control of the vessel's operation. Equipped for dredging to depths of 18.5m, the Pat M's 4m 3bucket will be capable of dredging 500m 3(1,000 tonnes) per hour in the hands of Humber Work Boats' experienced operator.
