01 Jan 2002
A christening ceremony before Christmas saw Aker Yards, Soviknes Verft AS in Norway deliver the advanced multipurpose offshore vessel M/S Normand Rover to Norwegian operators Solstad Offshore. The Normand Rover is the first offshore vessel to be equipped with the Compact Azipod propulsion systems from ABB Oy Marine and Turbocharging.
ABB has delivered a complete package solution to Normond Rover consisting of two Compact Azipod propulsion systems each rated at 2.3MW, a complete electric power system, thruster motors and drives, power management, joystick and dynamic positioning systems.
The ready to mount pods were delivered from ABB's production facility with 14 days allocated for mounting but in the event, the installation process was successfully completed in only seven days.
The 92.4m long vessel is of the UT 745E design developed by Rolls Royce Marine and, in addition to the usual supply service role, will also lend itself to subsea operations such as ROV deployment, diving and maintenance tasks.
Normand Rover has been chartered to the Mexican oil company Pemex for two years and is already performing subsea services in the Gulf of Mexico.
