Hydraulic Thruster Range Takes a Bow
01 Jan 2002
A new range of hydraulically powered bow and stern mounted thrusters has joined the QL marine accessory programme which is exclusively distributed by Volvo Penta through their worldwide dealer network.
There are also major upgrades to the range of QL electrically powered thrusters, including improved outputs, smaller installed sizes, enhanced reinforced composite propeller designs and better electrical integrity.
Developing 100 and 150kg of thrust respectively, the new BP1000H and BP1500H hydraulic units are suitable for both pleasure and light commercial duties for craft in the 40 to 75ft range with an existing hydraulic supply installed.
These compact units combine the benefits of continuous and more stable thrust that is unaffected by battery status or capacity. This enables a smaller unit to be installed in place of a larger electrical one and operated to achieve the same function simply by extending its running time. Because there is effectively no limit to running time, these new hydraulic thrusters can be used for continuous course compensation or correction.
The hydraulic supply system can be fitted with a proportional control valve so that the propellers on each of the thrusters can be run at a different speed. This enables the units to deliver the precise outputs required for accurate compensation of course deviations over extended passages.
In effect the thrusters cause the boat to move diagonally through the water. The control valve, either the standard on/ off type or more advanced proportional speed type used for course compensation, forms part of the onboard hydraulic system and is not supplied by Volvo Penta.
