Cummins and Goings of Busy China Yard

Welders and fitters are busy at China's Guangzhou Panyu Lingshan Shipyard where a pair of self-dumping hopper barges are taking shape in a building shed on the shore of the Pearl River. In an adjacent shed a 19m launch for the Hong Kong Immigration Department awaits the installation of a pair of Cummins QSK19 engines with 3:1 ZF gears. The launch, built to Hong Kong Marine Department standards, has a pair of Cummins/Onan gensets and a 15 knot running speed.

On the inland side of the building sheds, steel is being cut and shaped for additional projects. At the fitting out dock a 29.4m tug is having a pair of 12 cylinder 1,200hp Cummins KTA38-M2 engines fitted.

The engines will drive through ZF 6:1 reduction gears to turn four bladed propellers in kort nozzles. The boat has an 8.7m beam and moulded depth of 4.1m.

This tug, T.B. Martha 1, was ordered by a Singapore-based broker on behalf of an Indonesian customer. The 2,400hp Bureau Veritas classed ocean going tug will have a running speed of 12 knots and the bollard pull on the Dutch-built Mampaey Offshore Industries towing hook will be 40 tonnes. A large howser winch on the bow sees the tug well equipped for ship handling.

The prolific Lingshan Shipyard is capable of building such a tug in only eight months.
