Scania Power Goes Fishing Off Jersey
01 Jun 2002
Jersey's first Scania powered charter fishing vessel has recently been delivered to Tarka Seatrips of St Helier.
Theseus II is an Interceptor 38 built by Safehaven Marine of Ireland and powered by a single Scania DI12 44M 12 litre diesel engine.
The 38ft vessel has a 12ft beam, a draft of 3.5ft and displaces 9 tonnes. It is of GRP construction with a deep V deadrise hull designed for high speeds in rough conditions.
The seventh vessel to be delivered from the Interceptor range, Theseus II is custom designed to suit Tarka Seatrips' requirement for a charter angling vessel with substantial deck area for at least 12 passengers while a comfortable and spacious cabin provides luxury for corporate chartering. The vessel is also capable of commercial fishing during the winter.
A number of specific design features were incorporated such as transom door and wheelchair securing rails along the deck, allowing for disabled anglers.
A large insulated fish hold and processing station with chute enable efficient storage of the catch. Other features specifically requested by Tarka include a portside helm, extra seating adjacent to the helm for at least seven passengers and an outside toilet situated behind the slightly enlarged wheelhouse.
The vessel's DI12 engine is an in-line 6 cylinder turbocharged diesel with water-to-water cooling. At the customer's request it has been de-rated to 250 hp at 1,600rpm. The unit is coupled directly to a Twin Disc gearbox and through shafting to a four bladed propeller. In trials, Theseus II has achieved a top speed of 20 knots and cruised at 16-17 knots fully laden.
To increase engine life, the Scania DI12 incorporates the unique Scania Saver Ring, a coke scraping cylinder liner ring which, combined with a Keystone type top piston ring, permits high and continuous loads without the risk of bore polishing.
