Volvo Penta Launch Workboat Engine Range
01 Jun 2002
Volvo Penta continues to broaden its engine programme with a series of 5 and 7 litre marine diesels for heavy and medium-heavy commercial operation and marine auxiliary systems. The new D5 and D7 engines substantially expand Volvo Penta's customer offerings for various types of smaller workboats.
The D5/D7 series are finely tuned and operate at comparatively low rpm, which, in combination with high torque, make them suitable for displacement and semi-hover workboats. Each engine also has a number of power outlets for various applications and is type-approved by the leading international class societies.
The D5 is an in-line 4 cylinder engine of 4.76 litres and the D7 is an in-line 6 cylinder of 7.15 litres. Both are available in various versions, with turbo or with turbo and charged-air cooler.
Volvo Penta has also introduced the new D12 Heavy Duty, a 12 litre marine diesel of in-line 6 cylinder configuration with totally electronic control which is the first of a new generation of engines for heavy commercial operations. The D12 will be an economical and effective machine for demanding commercial applications such as ferries, fishing boats and other workboats in continuous operation. There is also a D12 version for marine auxiliary functions, and as a complete generator unit.
The D12 underwent a comprehensive testing programme prior to introduction. Laboratory tests were combined with tests at sea at Volvo Penta's Goteborg facility, and a test installation on a ferry in regular traffic.
Overall, 15,000 hours were expended in the laboratory and 18,000 hours at sea.
