Boskalis Wins Gothenburg Harbour Dredging Contract

Royal Boskalis Westminster nv has won an order for broadening and deepening the entrance channels to Sweden's Port of Gothenburg in a dredging contract valued at more than ?30m. The client is the Swedish Maritime Organisation (SMO) and the Safer Fairways to Gothenburg Project, will start in December, with completion due in February 2004.
Phase 1 is the broadening and deepening of the Torshamnschannel while in Phase 2, the Bottoledan fairway will be broadened and deepened.
Trailing suction hopper dredgers will dredge in total some 10,000,000m 3of clay while another 400,000m 3of rock will be drilled, blasted and dredged.
Boskalis Sweden will carry out the works.
SMO's intention is for Gothenburg harbour to achieve a major improvement concerning safety of navigation and also an increased capacity for its fairways and harbour. Later, the Skandiaharbour will also be altered to accommodate larger ships and container cranes.
