Swedes Speed to seawork in Record Setting Run
01 Jun 2002
The company's Managing Director, K-A Sundin, told the seawork team, 'Dockstavarvet are committed to establishing a 600 nautical mile speed record from Gothenburg to Dover with our innovative 16m IC 15 M fast patrol boat.
The vessel will then continue on to the seawork2002 marina where we expect it to be the centre of attention.'
Emphasising the seriousness of the effort, the record attempt has been organised by Dag Pike, perhaps the world's most respected specialist in record breaking voyages, whose achievements include The Blue Riband for crossing the Atlantic.
Pike has chosen for his crew the Master Mariner Mikael Hinnerson and Fredrik Falkman, both highly experienced at handling high speed vessels in all conditions.
The vessel is expected to cover the 600 mile route in 15 hours, including two fuel stops. Its outstanding performance is achieved by a combination of high technology design characteristics and the thrust created by twin Caterpillar C18 1,000hp engines driving Rolls-Royce Kamewa FF-410 waterjets through Stromag hydraulic clutches.
At 16.1m loa, a beam of 3.8m and a draught of only 1m, the 20 tonnes cruising displacement vessel is capable of sprint speeds exceeding 50 knots.
Built at Dockstavarvet's yard 200 miles north of Stockholm, the attempt on the record will have commenced from Gothenburg between 11 and 14 June, depending on weather and sea state prospects. The finish will be timed by Dover Harbour Control.
The fully commissioned vessel will be presented at seawork2002 with an inventory of navigational, communications and safety equipment. Initial public inspections will be carried out by selected technical media and regional TV stations.
However visitors to seawork2002 will be welcomed aboard from 18 through 20 June.
