Safety Kit on Show at Posidonia
01 May 2002
With universal automatic identification systems (UAIS) becoming a new requirement from 1 July 2002, McMurdo has collaborated with their Portsmouth UK neighbours, Transas, to jointly develop the MT1 UAIS system.
Manufactured by McMurdo using software skills from Transas, the MT1 shipboard transponder system will be among the new products from McMurdo on show at the forthcoming Posidonia exhibition in Greece.
Also on show at Posidonia will be the new McMurdo F1 VHF radio with integral Class D DSC. It complies with most European legislation and will be a suitable replacement radio for the end of channel 16 monitoring. Programmable for up to 30 private channels, its features include dual watch, memory channel scanning, nine user selected scanning programmes and a scan all channels facility. It can be interfaced with GPS to provide accurate position identification and has a remote speaker facility.
The mobile phone sized Fastfind Plus personal location beacon will be the first personal safety product with an internal navigation device that will alert worldwide search and rescue services of an emergency and pinpoint the user's location.
It includes built-in GPS with 406MHz satellite technology to provide typically a three minute alert time and position information to within 30m.
The Guardian man overboard device is built into a wristwatch to ensure it is worn at all times.
The Guardian MOB system comprises a small radio transmitter that emits a swept tone on the internationally recognised 121.5MHz search and rescue frequency that can be picked up by the MOB emergency receiver or MOB direction finder to track the Guardian and facilitate rapid MOB recovery.
The new L6 one piece all round flashing light is designed for use on lifejackets and exceeds stringent IMO requirements for lifejacket lights. The incorporation of new electronic circuitry has enabled McMurdo to significantly reduce the size of the L6, making it easier to fit to both new style and existing lifejackets. The high visibility white light flashes at between 50 to 70 times per minute and will continue to do so for over eight hours.
