Increase in Lawsuit Number Triggers Safety Surfaces Boom

A massive increase in the number of personal injury lawsuits being brought by people hurt at work or in public places has resulted in a business boom for a company which manufactures and installs slip-proof stair tread covers and gratings.

Fibreglass Grating Ltd has reported a ten-fold increase in orders for its safety stair tread covers in the last year. The Clacton UK based company believes this massive upsurge in demand for its products is mainly due to the increasing tendency of employees or customers to sue the owners of premises where they have been injured.

Employers and those companies or organisations whose premises are used by the public are becoming more concerned about the enormous cost of having to defend personal injury lawsuits.

Fibreglass Grating has been providing slip-resistant fibreglass tread covers onto stairs for six years. Until recently their customers had been largely in industrial and commercial sectors such as offshore oil platforms, ships and other facilities fitted with hazardous stairs. Increasingly the company is receiving orders from local authorities, airport operators and port authorities, all of whom wish to reduce the risk of someone being injured on their stairs.

'The stair tread covers are ideal for port authorities, where piers, pontoons and jetties often have awkward steps, said Fibreglass Grating's Director Colin Burns. "The fibreglass stands up well in harsh marine environments, resisting corrosion as well as algae and seaweed growth.'

The company's fibreglass grating panels have also proven popular in maritime applications such as pier, pontoon and jetty deckings as well as shipboard applications on vessels with potentially treacherous footing such as dredgers.
