Cyprus Seeks Bidders for Larnaka Port Re-development
01 Sep 2002
The Cypriot Government's intention is to redevelop the port, transforming it into a major cruise passenger destination, the re-development being undertaken as a public private partnership.
The re-development is likely to include the reconfiguration of the existing port infrastructure (to include a larger vessel turning circle and the realignment of quays) and the development of the extensive land that is within the port boundaries.
The concessionaire will be required to undertake the port and real estate development, to manage the real estate, and to undertake the passenger and commercial port operations. The form of the real estate development will have to be consistent with, and complementary to, the development of the port as a major cruise passenger destination.
The Cypriot authorities are aiming to attract bidders with innovative re-development concepts and approaches, which will enable the Republic of Cyprus to maximise the project benefits and provide value for money.
The authorities in Cyprus released Invitations to Tender for the redevelopment of Larnaca port in late July. In a statement, the Communications and Works Ministry said that it was initiating a tenders process for the award of a concession contract to a suitable bidder or consortium.
The contractor will be expected to undertake the port and real estate development, to manage it and to undertake the passenger and commercial port operations. The Cypriot government said it was 'was aiming to attract bidders with innovative redevelopment concepts and approaches'.
The deadline for the bids is 29 November.
