IMCA Builds Lifting Appliance Incident Database

Crane operations are one of the most widespread aspects of the offshore industry and are common to marine, diving, survey and ROV operations. It was thus natural that the International Marine Contractors Association, which has divisions representing the interests of contractors involved in all four of these areas, should review lifting operations in its effort to improve offshore safety.

'Although there is a definite difference in the type of lifting operation and criticality of lift, dependent on the operation performed, common aspects of any lift are that any failures can cause delays, loss of revenue or more importantly, injury to personnel', Jane Bugler, IMCA Technical Director, explained recently to delegates at the 7th North Sea Offshore Cranes Conference. 'In this respect, crane operations initially viewed as minor, may have major implications.'

IMCA and its members have identified the need for cross industry co-operation and a transparent sharing of information and knowledge with regard to lifting appliance incidents.

Poseidon Maritime was contracted to establish an appropriate and user friendly data collection method for analysis of lifting appliance failures. The Lifting Appliance Incident Form has now been created and circulated to IMCA members for use in reporting failures involving fixed and mobile cranes, A-frames, lifeboat davits, etc. Copies are available from the IMCA at Carlyle House, 235 Vauxhall Bridge Road, London SW1V 1EJ. Tel: +44 (0)20 7931 8171, Email: imca@imca-int. com Part 1 is designed to be completed promptly at the offshore site detailing the type of incident, activities being performed at the time, lifting appliance specifications and limitations, injury or damage, and failure point.

Part 2 is completed onshore after the final incident report.

The final report is then copied to IMCA for non-attributable input to the growing database.
