The MBR waste water treatment systems, which will handle both black and grey water, are being fitted in anticipation of tougher environmental legislation over the destroyers' lifetime. Recent sea trials on board the P&O Princess cruiseship Sun Princess have shown Hamworthy KSE's MBR system to better IMO requirements for faecal coliforms, BOD and suspended solids by a factor of more than 10.

With National Sanitation Federation and IMO certification awarded, the Hamworthy KSE MBR will be the first production system of its type to gain certification.

The company will supply two MBR systems per vessel, each incorporating six membrane modules. The configuration can handle approximately 2 to 2.5m 3of grey water per day, with 100% standby capacity.

The first of six MBR systems together with collection equipment are contracted for delivery in June 2003.
