Seacore Secures North Hoyle Wind Farm Contract
01 Sep 2002
Cornwall UK based Seacore Ltd has won a major contract worth in excess of £5m to install 30 large diameter monopile foundations in the seabed and design, build and install a 50m high, fully instrumented monopile supported meteorological mast for the 60MW North Hoyle offshore windfarm.
UK Energy Minister Brian Wilson has granted consent for the first such facility in Wales at a site between 8km and 11km off the north coast of Rhyl.
The North Hoyle wind farm, to be operated by National Wind Power, is one of 18 sites around the UK coast identified by the Crown Estate for offshore wind farm development.
The 4m diameter North Hoyle steel monopiles, ranging in length from 54m to 63m and weighing between 240 and 275 tonnes will each support a 2MW turbine with an 80m diameter three blade rotor. The wind turbines will have a hub height of 70m above sea level and will supply power into the national grid.
The main contract for the construction of the wind farm has been awarded to a consortium of Vestas-Celtic Wind Technology Ltd and Mayflower Energy Ltd. Seacore, working for Vestas-Celtic, will operate from its own eight legged jackup platform in approximately 12m of water.
Seacore will use its own Teredo T40 reverse circulation drilling rig in conjunction with a large hydraulic piling hammer in a drive, drill, drive operation to install the monopile turbine tower foundations into the seabed.
Seacore is scheduled to start on site in February 2003 and with 24 hour operation aims to finish the six month project at the end of August 2003 prior to the North Hoyle wind farm going onstream in autumn 2003.
