Fassmer's Tough Baltic Replaces Two Ships
01 Sep 2002
Germany's Fr Fassmer shipyard knew from the outset that its new 23.9m sounding vessel Baltic, just delivered to local shipping operators in Stralsund, would be a challenging project.
The order, placed by authorities in Rendsburg, was demanding. It stipulated not only a speed of 12 knots and a maximum draught of 1.54m, but also very good manoeuvring, high course stability and optimal echolot arrangement.
The resultant vessel, with a trailer unit, has replaced both an older ship of the same name and an additional measurement vessel. Its job is to monitor maritime safety along 700kms of German territorial waters from the Danish border in the west to the Polish border in the east. It will also measure moles, berths and sandbanks.
Baltic, which is 5.85m wide and displaces 102 tons, has a steel hull from Metal Investment in Poland and an aluminium superstructure. The bridge has optimal all-round vision and behind it is a generous 45m 2working deck. With a crew of three she has a range of 620nm.
The vessel is driven by two MTU main engines Type 6R183 TE62 each of 275kW and special equipment includes a Fassmer RR 4.2 rescue boat.
