Forth Coastguard Conduct Ferry Coordination Exercise

Scotland's Forth Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre conducted an exercise with the Greek registered ro-ro ferry Superfast 10 last month as the vessel was on passage from Zeebrugge to Rosyth. The 30,285 tonne, 203m LOA vessel was approximately two hours from the Fairway Buoy when the one hour exercise commenced.

The exercise scenario consisted of a fire on board the vessel with two injured crew members. It was also reported that one of the trucks on board was carrying hazardous cargo. Such 'coordination' exercises involve the active participation of command and coordinating agencies operating remotely from each other but without the despatch of actual SAR resources.

The aims and objectives were to exercise communication procedures between the vessel and Forth Coastguard and to ensure that the information held within the SAR Cooperation Plan is current and accurate. All the aims and objectives were met and achieved.

Forth Coastguard's District Ferry Liaison Officer Bob Abercrombie said, 'This was a successful exercise to test the ferry and their Search and Rescue Cooperation Plan. I would like to thank the Master and the crew of Superfast 10 for their assistance, and the owners for allowing this important exercise to take place.'
