Spanish Building Ropax for Faroes
01 Apr 2003
The Spanish Izar San Fernando shipyard has entered the conventional ferry sector with the keel laying ceremony for a Ropax ferry that will operate in the harsh weather conditions around the Faroe Islands. The contract is with the Islands' Ministry of Trade and Industry and the vessel will be operated by Strandfaraskip Landsins.
The ferry will connect Thorshavn Port with islands in the south of the archipelago, where temperatures of -20ºC and high waves are commonplace. The project must also consider poor accessibility at some of the ports.
The ropax will be 135m LOA with a beam of 22.7m and have a capacity for 1,000 passengers.
The accommodation is distributed in two decks and will include large lounges and 34 cabins. There is ro-ro capacity for 200 cars accessing through two stern ramps and another stern starboard. The ship can also take wide trucks and dangerous cargo. Four marine diesel engines provide a total power of 13,440kW, giving the vessel a top speed of 21 knots.
The ferry will meet SOLAS requirements and also those of the Danish Administration for Passenger Transport. It will be classed with Lloyds Register before its scheduled delivery in October 2004.
