Felixstowe To Lift TEU Total

The Port of Felixstowe UK is undertaking a major expansion of its container handling capacity, ordering three Ship to Shore Gantry Cranes (SSGCs) and 10 new Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes (RTGCs) from the Zhenhua Port Machinery Company (ZMPC) of Shanghai. The latest order is part of the Options provided in an existing crane contract and the new equipment will be delivered in January 2004.

The new SSGCs will be the largest at the Port and of similar specification to two already delivered. Each will be capable of handling containers stowed 22 wide, with twin lift capability and a heavy lift capability of 85 tonnes. The new RTGCs will be capable of lifting one container over five and will straddle seven rows of boxes plus a roadway.

All the new cranes will be deployed on the Port's Trinity Terminal.

The new order follows the delivery of ten RTGCs and two SSGCs for Trinity Terminal last year and will bring to 28 the total number of shipside cranes at the Port. The container yard will be serviced by a total of 86 RTGCs.

The new equipment is linked to plans to extend Trinity Terminal, thus improving the productivity and competitiveness of the Port against European rivals. The Trinity Terminal extension will provide an additional 270m of deepwater quay, enabling the Port to handle more of the latest generation of super postPanamax boxships simultaneously. It will also provide 14 hectares of additional container storage space.

The expansion of Felixstowe will increase capacity by some 415,000 TEU, to well over 3 million TEU per annum, with the new handling equipment boosting capacity by a further 100,000 TEU.
