Precise Heavy Lift Placement Off Qatar
01 Apr 2003
Smit Heavy Lift's Marine Projects Department completed the loading, dry tow, offloading and placement of a permanent production facility (PPF) in the UAE last month. The contract was awarded by the Anadarko Qatar Energy Company of Dubai.
The jack-up rig DMS Venture was converted in Jebel Ali for a 20 year deployment as a 10,120 tonne PPF. The semi-submersible barge Smit Anambas, which was towed from Columbo to Jebel Ali by the Smit Labuan was mobilised for the transport.
Smit's scope of works included the design of the cribbing, fenders and seafastings as well as supervision during installation.
The Smit team used the Smit Labuan and several local tugs to shift the Smit Anambas from its berth and manoeuvre it stern first under the PPF. By a combination of ballasting/deballasting the Smit Anambas and jacking down the PPF, the full weight of the PPF was transferred onto the barge and safely moored to the jetty. When all welding and other preparatory works had been completed, the transport departed to the AL Rayyan Field off Qatar.
The PPF was offloaded in the field and with the assistance of five tugs placed in its final position next to the existing production facility at 3m distance and with a very tight tolerance of approximately 50 cm and 0.25º heading.
