Snappy Conversions for German Cutters

German fishing authorities in Cuxhaven were reported very satisfied with the way German shipyard Bremerhavener Dock GmbH (BREDO) lengthened and converted three of their cutters and put them back into service on time, all inside just six weeks.

The work on the cutters NC 120 Susanne (492grt), NC 308 J von Colln (459grt), and NC 312 Bianca (455grt) cost the Cuxhavener Kutterfisch-Zentrale a total€4m.

The ships, of different lengths to start with, were all transformed into vessels of just over 40 m in length. Each was Z-cut prior to conversion and 5-7 m long sections from local section builder Stahlbau-Nord Jacht und Bootsbau were inserted.

BREDO enjoys a reputation for refits on a wide range of vessels which also include big tankers and car carriers.

The three converted Cuxhaven cutters have now been returned to fishing duties with their owners after taking on new equipment.

Their loading capacities have, however, been reduced, despite the lengthening. That's because fish which was previously loaded loose into the holds is now packed into crates and refrigerated at sea.

The process saves unloading labour costs on land which used to account for 20% of the value of the catch.
