'Jam-mar' Is The New Irish Cyclone

The Cyclone 30 design of Cornwall UK based Cygnus Marine has proven so popular that versions of the craft have been under continuous production at the Penryn yard for the last four and a half years. One of the most recent deliveries is Jam-mar, a fast planing workboat and fishing design for Vincent O'Regan of Skibbereen in Co Cork.

Built with financial assistance from Board Iascaigh Mhara (BIM), the Irish Sea Fisheries Board, to DoCMNR draft regulations for fishing vessels under 15m, the vessel was surveyed by the UK SFIA.

Power is supplied by a single Caterpillar 3216TA engine driving through an MG5061A gearbox with gearbox PTO and trolling valve. A Halyard high-rise exhaust system is carried right up to the gunwales in solid GRP piping to prevent any possibility of back-flooding.

Teignbridge stern gear is protected by a rope cutter fitted to the propeller shaft.

The wheelhouse is offset to port and fitted with full electronics supplied by Barry Electronics which were fitted by Cygnus and commissioned by Mannel Marine. Behind the wheelhouse is the hauler console in heavy gauge alloy, angled to give a further forward hauling point and aligned to the 5in stainless davit arm.

Spencer Carter hydraulics are fitted, with a 200lb slave and splitter/divertor to net hauler position. Both the davit arm and net hauler are set into the gunwhales with a beefed up hull section and reinforcing.

A second engine and gearbox control station is also found by the hauler pedestal.

The vessel is intended for single-handed use and features a self-shooting transom door with edge stainless protection and pound-board angled guides.

Two small vivier tanks will be placed into the after quarters, for which a pump system and piping is already in place. Gunwale rails and gantry/net clearing bar are all in stainless steel, with provision for later fitting of a cat-catcher.

The skeg, rudder, keel, deck fittings, mast, hauler panel protection and more were all fabricated in-house from stainless steel. Fire protection is provided by intumescent gelcoat, fire detection equipment and a sprinkler system, remote fuel cut-offs and breather closures.
