Tugs & Towing by Jack Gaston

UNV Add Azimuthing Sterndrive Tugs to Their Range

Following hard on the heels of a very successful series of Voith tractor tugs Spanish shipbuilder Union Naval Valencia SA (UNV) has completed the first tugs of a new azimuthing Stern drive (ASD) design. Named CMM Veracruz and CMM Cordoba they were delivered earlier this year to CM Mexicana, of Mexico. UNV's extensive order book includes four further vessels of the same type, two for Mexican owners and two for Spain. All four are scheduled for delivery next year. At the time of writing the company reported eight tugs delivered so far this year and twelve on order.

CMM Veracruz and CMM Cordoba were built to a design by naval architects Cintranaval S.L. and have been classed by Germanisher Lloyd +100 A5 Tug, FiFi 1, +MC AUT. The vessels are intended for unrestricted use in harbour and at sea and the specification included fire fighting and anti-pollution services.

Both vessels are virtually identical, with an overall length of 30.5m, breadth of 10.6m and maximum draft of 5.13m. The substantial hull has a raised forecastle and is well protected by mix of rubber fendering of various type and sections all round the vessel. Internal tanks are provided for 195 cu/m of fuel oil, 77m 3of fresh water, 24m 3of ballast, 16 cu/m of foam agent and 9 cu/m of chemical detergent. Two Schottel azimuthing propulsion units, fitted with controllable pitch propellers, are driven by Caterpillar 3606 DITA main engines developing a total of 5516bhp (4060kW) at 1000rev/min. Each main engine is also coupled to one fire fighting pump and one hydraulic pump to power the deck machinery.

During trials a bollard pull of 64 tonnes ahead and 59 astern was recorded, with the main engines at 100% MCR. The tugs have a maximum speed of 13.67 knots.

For shiphandling the tugs are equipped with two Rolls-Royce combined towing winches and anchor windlasses installed on the forecastle. Each one is hydraulically driven and comprises one de-clutchable cable lifter, one warping head and one winch drum. Both towing winch drums have a brake load of 150 tonnes and accommodate150m of nylon rope 80 mm in diameter. For towing at sea the tugs are fitted with a Rolls-Royce single drum-towing winch aft. This winch also has a 150 tonne brake-holding load and the drum has capacity for 600m of steel wire towline of 52mm diameter.

The winch has an automatic spooling system and an emergency de-clutching device.

All three winches can be controlled locally or by remote control from the bridge. A heavily reinforced double bitt is fitted with guide for the aft towing winch cable and a stern roller is installed at the after end of the towing deck.

A Cytecma electro-hydraulic, telescopic and articulated crane is provided on the boat deck, capable of lifting approx 1.3 tonnes at 7.8m. The hydraulic supply system is by means of a self-contained power-pack. Fire fighting equipment to FiFi 1 standard includes one monitor delivering water and one with a combined water/foam output.

A self protection spray system is included.

Accommodation onboard includes two single cabins, two double cabins, a galley, mess room and the usual washing and toilet facilites. The high wheelhouse is typical of many Cintranaval designs affording good visibility and is accessible internally and externally.
