Sakhalin Shallow Water Surveys
01 Feb 2003
Romona Geosolutions, a joint venture offshoot of Chessington-based Thales GeoSolutions and its Russian partner, J/S Romona, reports successful completion of major shallow water bathymetric surveys off Sakhalin Island, adjacent to the Lunskoye oil field.
Carried out on behalf of Sakhlin Energy Investment Co, a consortium comprising Shell Oil, Mitsubishi Corporation and the Mitsui Corporation, the surveys provided detailed near-shore bathymetric information over an area of 75 hectares for pipeline, beach landings and environmental monitoring. They will eventually form the basis for a beach landing facility which is to be built to facilitate construction of a mainland processing complex.
Thales' Richard Nelson says that an otherwise straightforward series of operations turned out to be particularly hazardous due to an inhospitable environmental and other hazardous conditions within the area. They could only be completed during daylight hours whenever sea and wind conditions permitted.
Moreover, the remoteness of the site necessitated working from a completely self-contained field camp that was only accessible by four-wheel drive vehicles or helicopters.
