Hydrographic Survey by David Goodfellow

U-Tows For China

WS EnviroTech of Selborne, Hampshire has delivered an advanced version of its U-Tow Mk 3 undulating marine data-gathering vehicle to the Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey in China following a delivery of two earlier systems to the Chinese State Oceanographic Administration (CSOA).

The system comprises a towed vehicle with an onboard suite of data acquisition instrumentation together with real-time displays and a newly-designed winch facility. CSOA versions undulate from near sea surfaces to depths of 100m to acquire data on fluorescence, turbidity, oxygen and other parameters necessary for monitoring the state of Chinese seas.

Systems in general can be readily deployed from research vessels, ferries, cargo ships, ocean liners and luxury yachts.

Their design was originally commissioned by the Sir Alister Hardy Foundation for Ocean Sciences (SAHFOS) in the mid-1990's as an enhancement of continuous plankton recorders.
