VT TSS Launches New Pipe Tracker

VT TSS has developed a new TSS 440 pipe and cable tracker with a claimed tracking range of up to 50% more than its predecessor, the TSS 340.

Sales of the latter, the company says, approached nearly 200 units for use by oil, gas and submarine cable industries for location and survey of subsea pipelines at depths down to 3,000m.

The 440 is basically designed for operation at even greater depths and more difficult locations. According to the company, one of the principal difficulties since overcome by its development team has been the effects that seawater exerts on pulse induction technology used by the 340 model. Powerful electromagnetic pulses generated by it pass through the seafloor and on reaching a metallic object, cause electrical eddy currents to be generated within in it. The currents create a small electrical discharge that the 340 measures and uses to compute depth and position of a pipe or cable.

The latest 440 system incorporates a number of practical refinements, including system processing being undertaken topsides, so making corrections possible. New Windows software also enables easier system use while new, more sensitive search coils and a new high-performance TSS altimeter significantly improve hardware.
