The currents create a small electrical discharge that the 340 measures and uses to compute depth and position of a pipe or cable.

The latest 440 system incorporates a number of practical refinements, including system processing being undertaken topsides, so making corrections possible. New Windows software also enables easier system use while new, more sensitive search coils and a new high-performance TSS altimeter significantly improve hardware.
