Demand Surge for Rough Terrain Container Handlers

As mobilisation builds for a possible war with Iraq, the Tank Automotive & Armaments Command (TACOM) of the US Army has placed another delivery order with the Kalmar RT Center LLC for Rough Terrain Container Handlers (RTCH). The new delivery order totals 93 machines and other logistical items carrying a total price tag of $50m.

In addition to this order, the UK Ministry of Defence has taken delivery of ten RTCHs and is currently in the process of exercising an option for an additional ten. The UK contract as well as an order from the Australian Army has been made possible by TACOM, which has sole rights to the RTCH, approving the sale to the military defence forces of friendly nations.

The US Army contract covers deliveries over the period 2001-2005. Yearly order releases are estimated to involve a total of up to 500 units. Kalmar's RT series features both a commercial version and the military RTCH version. The latter is fitted with a moving operator's cab and a folding boom assembly which reduce the vehicle's transport height, making it possible to mobilise the machine via large aircraft, ships, rail or road trailer without disassembley.

Kalmar will market the RT machines in Europe through a specially selected dealer network.
