Timely Topics for UKHMA Spring Seminar
01 Feb 2003
Sandwiched between the opening address at 09:25 by UKHMA President, Captain Gary Wilson, and his closing remarks at 16:55 will be a day of valuable discussion. With the IMO International Ship and Port Security (ISPS) Code coming into force on 1 July 2004, Ashley Reeve, Head of the Maritime Security Branch at TRANSEC, which will oversee implementation of the Code in the UK, will examine its impact on British ports. Captain Nigel Hunt of BMT Reliability Consultants will provide a consultants view of the actions required of ports to comply with the Code. Continuing the theme, Dr Gavin Hough will present material and case studies on the latest high resolution surveillance systems deployed in ports, describing how integrated systems which serve both security and operational needs are being developed.
Among other topics scheduled for coverage, Andrew Burr, Head of the Regulatory Branch in the Ports Division at the Department for Transport and architect of the Port Marine Safety Code, will discuss how the Code is being implemented following an extensive review at the DfT.
He will also provide insights of the Port Division's plans for the future.
In another interesting presentation, Dr Mike Hadley, QinetiQ's EU Research Project Manager, and Jeff Walton of SML Technologies will outline developments in the support now becoming available to vessels from VTS Centres and other sources via either carry aboard or permanently fitted equipment. The concept has recently been the subject of an EU research project titled Innovative Portable Pilot Assistance (IPPA) and has led to a revised view of how Vessel Traffic Management might be conducted in the future.
