Stemat in Irish Sea Jack-Up Delivery

With its recent successful installation of a large jack-up rig in the Irish Sea, Stemat Marine Services of Rotterdam has proved that with the right equipment in the right place at the right time, almost anything can be lifted. But there was little room to spare when the assembled Calder rig was finally unloaded from Stemat's heavily modified winch pontoon Pontra Maris.
Stemat was chosen as subcontractor to install the rig and Pontra Maris was subsequently selected to perform the heavy lift duties because of the width of its hull. At 18m wide it would just pass between the extended legs of the rig.
However, various stages were involved before the rig could be off-loaded.
First the deck height of the Pontra Maris was increased by 1.7m at Stemat's Rotterdam yard.
Then the pontoon was towed to IJmuiden where suction piles were loaded. These would later be used to anchor/position the rig's legs. This was followed by a trip to Teesport UK where the suction piles were unloaded, after which heavy lift trailers were used to load the rig from the quay. With the jack-up made sea fast, the suction piles, now attached to the rig's legs, were reloaded and the entire assembly towed to Holyhead, where the jack-up was prepared for installation.
After being manoeuvred into position at the Calder Field, the rig jacked itself up and off the Pontra Maris. Assistance on site was provided by Stemat's multi-purpose vessel Katliz.
