Gothenburg Fairway Dredging Gets New Year Start

Dutch dredging giant Boskalis starts work this month on a €30m project to broaden and deepen the entrance channels to the Port of Gothenburg in Sweden. The contract with the Swedish Maritime Organisation is called 'Safer Fairways to Gothenburg' and will be completed in two phases by February 2004.

Boskalis technicians change the Coastways draghead late last year in trials to find the most suitable tools for dredging the Gotehenburg fairways.

Phase 1 is the straightening and widening of the Torshamnschannel and the deepening of its extension into Skandia Harbour. This work includes dredging 8.17 million 3ofclay and the drilling, blasting and dredging of 237,000m 3of rock.

In Phase 2, the Bottoleden fairway will be broadened and deepened. Hopper dredgers will remove some 10 million 3of clay and a further 400,000m 3ofrock will be drilled blasted and dredged. The Skandia harbour will eventually be altered to accommodate larger ships and container cranes.

Boskalis' suction dredger Coastway was deployed late last year to conduct test dredging along the edge of the fairway at the bend at Mavholmen.

Different dragheads were tested to determine which would be most effective when works got underway. At the same time, both the drilling platform and plant to remove the blasted rock were being adapted at a shipyard in Finland.
