‘New-era’ Terminal Chalks up First Year Success

What is said to be Europe’s most advanced handling facility, the unique high-tech Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA) in Hamburg has handled morethan half a million TEUs in its first year of operation.
The largely automated facility, where gantry cranes, automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and portal cranes are all computer controlled, had a ‘positive year’ said owners, port operating concern HHLA and German container shipping firm Hapag-Lloyd.
They said 111 large container ships had docked, among them the world’s biggest boxship, the 8000 TEU OOCL Shenzhen. More than 2,000 feeder vessels also berthed at the CTA on services into and out of the Baltic
