Sustainability Research Study on Coastal Defences at Roa Island

A vital causeway that links the residents of Roa Island, just off the northwest coast of England, to the mainland at Rampside in Morecambe Bay, Cumbria, is the focus of important sustainability research after being identified in a Government initiated Shoreline Management Plan that ensures each coastal county in the UK has appropriate policies for coastal protection and sea defences.

As part of the Roa Island Shorelink Sustainability Study commissioned by the Capita Group on behalf of Barrow Borough Council, ABP Marine Environmental Research (ABPmer) has been appointed to provide an appraisal of the coastal defences along the causeway, which can be flooded during storms. The study will also assess the coastal defences on Roa Island and make recommendations for maintenance and refurbishment work.

Site inspections of the sea defences and the natural environment will be undertaken jointly by ABPmer and Coastal Engineering UK before making recommendations about future coastal defence requirements.

The recently launched ABPmer Processes Team focuses on work in the flood and coastal management sector and can combine this with the company’s ability to undertake dredging and marine navigation studies.
