Thales undertook a comprehensive programme of measurements in difficult conditions, helping to gain a greater understanding of the hydrodynamic regime offshore Essex. The oceanographic data collected will be used to assist in MV Arie Dirk the design of windfarm structures and to determine the movement of sediment across Gunfleet Sand.

Data processing took place at Thales' dedicated facilities in Cape Town.

Operations were conducted from the , with GPS used for positioning both the vessel and the moorings. To minimise the risk of the moorings being accidentally trawled by fishermen, surface marker buoys were placed at the measurement sites.

For the measurements, Thales GeoSolutions deployed Valeport 730D directional wave and tide recorders, fitted with current and turbidity sensors in seabed mounted frames. The data was collected and logged at 12 minute intervals except for the wave data which was recorded every 60 minutes.
