Extended 'WD Fairway' Goes Back to Work
01 Jun 2003
Boskalis ' jumbo trailing suction hopper dredger WDFairway has been restored to its former eminence as the world's largest dredger following the completion of lengthening and other works at the Sembawang Shipyard in Singapore.
The addition of a 54m midship section has given the vessel an LOA of 231m and taken hopper capacity from 23,350m3 to 35,500m 3, re-leapfrogging the Vasco da Gama of Belgian contractor Jan De Nul.
Also included in the works were the addition of a bulbous bow, the addition of a ducktail extending aftships by 5m, and an increase of the main deck height by 4m. Dredging draught has been increased from 11.5m to 13.7m and the vessel's speed has been reduced slightly from 17.1 knots to 16.4 knots.
WD Fairway immediately returned to work on Phase 2 of the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) Project in Malaysia. The project involves the addition of eight mooring sites to the existing port and is precisely the type of work which justifies the expensive extension of an already high capacity dredger.
Working together with other jumbo trailers, the WD Fairway will dredge and remove some 39 million m 3of unsuitable material from the harbour area and dump it elsewhere while simultaneously winning 35 million m 3of sand with which to proceed the building works.
