UKHO’s List of Lights Gets Digital Launch
01 Jun 2003
The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) launched its new Admiralty Digital List of Lights at Norshipping in Oslo earlier this month. Developed with the professional mariner in mind and supplying details of more than 70,000 navigational lights worldwide on one CD, it uses exactly the same official data as its paper counterpart.
Digital products are becoming increasingly important to the mariner and the Digital List of Lights joins a growing list of UKHO products which also includes near worldwide coverage with electronic charts via its Admiralty ARCS and ENC services. The major benefits of the Digital List are automated updating facilities which can be applied weekly in a matter of seconds via CD, email, or web download, saving time and reducing the risk of human error.
The intuitive PC based software includes a sophisticated chart based interface to quickly identify lights and a powerful search tool allows the user to search by name or geographical position. The familiar tabular format of the paper Admiralty List of Lights is enhanced by a simple graphical style, making it easy to interpret complex lights data. The Admiralty Digital List of Lights service is sold via a flexible annual subscription which includes all updates and a free second user license for back-up purposes.
