Norwegian Company in China Shipbuilding Joint Venture
01 Jun 2003
'Starting up outside of Norway will help to strengthen the environment and level of expertise we have locally, ' said Ulstein CEO Gunvar Ulstein. 'In China we will build ships in a wider range than we have traditionally built in Ulsteinvik. Consequently, our new initiative will not compete directly with the shipyard in Ulsteinvik.'
Vidar Eikrem, who will head up Ulstein's Chinese operation, added, "With this initiative, we will seek to increase the market share within the offshore industry. By using our competence in a wider range, we will reach a new and larger market than we do at present.'
The new company, Ulstein Yangzijiand Shipbuilding will have a small project team of from two to four people, in addition to Eikrem, on site in China when the first contracts are in place.
'Our objective is transfer some of the strengths within project management and implementation and in this way create a competitive concept for our customers, ' said Eikrem.
