When George Capacci, General Manager of the State of Alaska's Department of Transportation & Public Facilities , pushed a button recently at Derecktor Shipyards facility in Bridgeport, Connecticut USA, he set computer controlled machinery to work cutting the first piece of aluminium plate for the high speed ferry M/V Chenega .The ceremony marked the start of construction for the second of two 235ft high speed ferries for the Alaska Marine Highway System.

Aberdeen Harbour Board hasplaced an order worth almost £650,000 with Macduff Shipyards for the construction of a new pilot cutter for the port. The steel vessel will replace the present Pilot Cutter No 1, which has been in service at the harbour since 1980.

When the unprecedented fifth Targa 31 for London's Metropolitan Police in only four years was handed over last month, it was delivered through stormy seas from Poole to the River Thames in one day without stopping.

Sweden's Storebro Bruks AB have signed a contract with the Danish Naval Material Command to build four of their special task craft SRC 90E, a 11.88m LOA lightweight, high speed vessel with a load capacity in excess of 2,000 kg. The four vessels will be delivered later this year.

Ro-Pax Ferries Under Build

Enterprise Nationale de Transports Maritimes de Voyageurs (ENTMV) has ordered two ro-pax ferries from Izar 's Seville yard. The Algerian state owned company will operate the new tonnage between Algiers and Marseilles with a call at Alicante. Each 1,300 passenger ferry will have a freight capacity equivalent to 300 cars or 42 trucks and passenger accommodation in 209 cabins.
Cheetah Ranges Far and Wide to seawork

seawork regulars Cheetah Marine recently crossed the Isle of Wight from their Ventnor yard to launch two new Cheetah catamarans at Cowes. A new Walkaround wheelhouse version of the 7.4m and a potting/ netting 6.2m were completed at the same time and sailed together for Guernsey in the Channel Islands.
