New Pilot Cutter for Aberdeen
01 Jun 2003
Aberdeen Harbour Board hasplaced an order worth almost £650,000 with Macduff Shipyards for the construction of a new pilot cutter for the port. The steel vessel will replace the present Pilot Cutter No 1, which has been in service at the harbour since 1980.
The Macduff yard has considerable experience of building steel vessels for the fishing industry and will begin work on the 15.25m long vessel immediately, with delivery scheduled for early next year.
Naval architects Murray, Cormack Associates have designed the vessel to be a stable platform for the transfer of pilots to and from ships using the port. They will also provide superintendancy services during the construction.
The new cutter will be highly manoeuvrable, with a bow thruster fitted as well as the twin Scania diesel engines which will provide the main propulsion. The vessel will be equipped with the latest radar and marine electronics.
William Farquhar, a Director of Macduff Shipyards, said, 'While we have a busy order book, the cutter is a welcome addition to our workload at a time when the fishing industry is facing a difficult future and it will help to ensure the continuing employment of the workforce.'
