Portsmouth UK based marine safety equipment manufacturers McMurdo have announced plans to set up regional 'centres of excellence' in major ports around the world.

These centres will give users access to experts who can provide advice and assistance on the installation and servicing of McMurdo products, which include UAIS, electronics and lights, Pains Wessex distress pyrotechnics and ICS NAVTEX and communication equipment.

McMurdo has recently launched their new McMurdo MT-1 UAIS, designed to meet mandatory IMO Class A UAIS carriage requirements which came into effect on 1 July 2002. It provides a tracking, positioning, and collision avoidance system.

The MT-1 automatically receives data from other ships in the vicinity and from shore based stations. Information received is split into three types, static and voyage related data which is transmitted every six minutes, and dynamic information which is transmitted every two seconds to three minutes depending on the ship's navigational status and speed.

The MT-1 comprises a transponder unit and Minimum Keyboard Display with a touchscreen LCD. The transponder unit provides a UAIS ship borne mobile station comprising an integral GPS engine used for system timing, a VHF transmitter, three VHF receivers and control electronics. The MT-1 has standard marine interface connections for GPS, navigation instruments, gyrocompass, and ECDIS or ARPA display systems.
