Sanmar own and operate a fleet of tugs in Toro-Adana and originally started constructing tugs for their own business in their own shipyard. In recent years the company initiated a policy of continually replacing tugs and selling virtually new, up to date, vessels to other operators.

Sanmar XII, the most recent completion, was delivered and joined the company's fleet in late March. The vessel was completed in three and a half months and is a direct sister to earlier vessels of the now well-established Sanmar series.

Sanmar XII is a twin-screw vessel of 18.29m in length overall, with a beam of 6.7m and draft of 3.2m. Two Caterpillar 3508B main engines, each rated at 1000bhp at 1800rev/min, drive a pair of LIPS (Kaplan type) propellers rotating within fixed nozzles. Steering is effected by a four hi-aspect ratio rudders.

On trials Sanmar XII produced a bollard pull of 28 tonnes and a free running speed of 11.5 knots.

Sanmar now have eight tugs of four different designs under construction. Seven of them are on schedule for completion in 2003, and all of the new vessels are to designs by Robert Allan Ltd. Included in the programme is at least one vessel of the new 'Nehir' class, a 22.5m twin screw vessel of 2400bhp with an anticipated bollard pull of 30 tonnes, and free running speed of 12.5 knots.
