    Work is underway at the Port of Liverpool's Seaforth Container Terminal on assembling the first of six new Noell straddle carriers. The machines were purchased by the Mersey Docks and Harbour Company to handle increased traffic generated by three new lines and organic growth among established services. 

  • The £1 Million Load Lifter

    Great Yarmouth Stevedoring faced a difficult task last month when required to unload a 20m long, 89 tonne drilling rig valued at £1 million from the hold of a cargo ship. They consulted Lifting Gear Hire, which specified a pair of 50 tonne Modular Lifting Beams plus wire rope slings to ensure safe carriage for the valuable load.

  • SMD Set To Acquire Hydrovision

    An agreement has been signed for Soil Machine Dynamics (SMD) to acquire the ongoing business of Hydrovision, subject to the usual diligence and contract. Seaeye Marine, a subsidiary of Hydrovision, is not included in the deal. 

  • Divers Deliver Rapid Permanent Repair

    Divers from UMC's Portland UK branch have successfully completed a complex hull plate insert repair to a vessel calling in their home Portland Port. 

Dredging

  • De Groot Delivers Complete Dredging Equipment Package

    De Groot Nijkerk Dredging equipment and Damen Shipyards have sold a North African customer a complete dredging package which includes a type CZ550 cutter suction dredger, a booster station, a floating pipeline and a Damen Multicat. The second complete package sold to the same customer, it will be used for cleaning and deepening artificial lakes used for drinking water storage as well as sand winning. 

  • 'Pallieter' No Palliative for van der Giessen

    The last dredger to be built at IHC's now doomed van der Giessen-de Noord shipyard was launched last month in Rotterdam. The 5,400m 3capacity trailing suction hopper dredger Pallieter was built for the Belgian contractor Dredging, Environmental and Marine Engineering NV (DEME).

  • Finnish Navy Orders Fansweep 20 Multi-beam System

    Bremen-based Atlas Hydrographic, which recently reported successful trials of its Parasound DS-2 parametric sub-bottom profiler aboard the Russian Academy of Sciences' research vessel, Akademik Boris Petrov, en route to the Kara Sea near Murmansk, has been commissioned to supply the Finnish Naval Research Institute in Helsinki with a Fansweep 20 multibeam system.

    Thales GeoSolutions in Chessington has won a $2.7m two-year contract for provision of its SkyFix-XP satellite differential global positioning system (SDGPS) and SkyFix DGPS services to support Veritas Geophysical Corporation's global fleet of seismic survey vessels operating from Houston, Crawley and Singapore.

    Trinity House in the UK has won a three year contract for the maintenance of aids to navigation around the coasts of Devon and Cornwall that are the responsibility of South West Water. These navaids, numbering more than 300 buoys and beacons, mark outfalls into rivers, estuaries and the sea, pipeline crossings and other obstructions in navigable waters.

    The Port of London Authority has installed a Tideland Signal MLED-120 at Broadness Point on the south bank of the River Thames opposite Tilbury, replacing a large incandescent lantern. 

  • UKHO Switches on Digital List of Lights

    The UK Hydrographic Office has launched the latest addition to its expanding digital products range. The Admiralty Digital List of Lights is aimed primarily at the SOLAS commercial shipping sector and provides information on over 70,000 navigational lights throughout the world. It builds on earlier digital trials covering UK waters introduced last year.

    A contemporary marine artist who helped to build clinker workboats as an apprentice shipwright in his youth has a feature exhibition of his works opening at London's National Maritime Museum next month. 

  • Camarc/ Kvichak for Savannah Pilots

    The Savannah Pilots of Savannah, Georgia USA have ordered a new 78ft pilot boat designed by the UK's Camarc Ltd which will be built at Kvichak Marine Industries of Seattle USA. The all aluminium craft's broad beam of 21ft 5in is expected to provide fine sea keeping and manoeuvrability characteristics, Main engines for the vessel will be a pair of Cummins KTA38 M2 units with a heavy duty rating for 1,350hp each at 1,900rpm. The engines will power Hamilton 651 waterjets through ZF2550 marine gears. 

  • Engine Rooms Protected at Europort

    Alfa Laval Marine & Diesel's engine room systems will be on show at Europort in two locations, at Alpha Laval's Stand 01.1167 in the Europahal and Kormarine's Stand U82.

  • New Portsmouth Yard Boosts British Shipbuilding

    The first new shipbuilding yard in Britain for many years was opened last month in ceremonies at Portsmouth Naval Base presided over by the Secretary of State for Defence, Geoff Hoon MP. The new £50 million facility for the VT Group features a high degree of automation in the fabrication and construction processes for a 20% productivity boost which VTbelieves will place it in a strong position to secure not only future build programmes for the British Royal Navy but for export customers as well. 

  • Controversy Haunts 'Ghost Ships' Scrapping

    Following discussions with authorities in Ireland, France, and Belgium, Robin Middleton, the UK Secretary of State's Representative in Marine Salvage and Intervention (SOSREP), has cleared the way with the United States Maritime Administration (MARAD) for Able UK and its contractors to begin the trans-Atlantic tow of the first four so-called 'Ghost Ships' from Virginia to Teesside for scrapping. Able UK has a £16m contract to scrap 13 derelict World War Two vintage military cargo and support vessels from a fleet of approximately 150 such ships anchored on the James River in Virginia.

    Marine salvors meeting in Athens last month expressed deep disappointment at the failure of the joint industry committee to raise SCOPIC Special Compensation rates in line with inflation since they were negotiated four years ago. 

  • Pollution Prevention Proposal

    The European Commission has adopted a proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and Council to equip the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA), established last year in the wake of the Erika disaster, with the legal and technical means necessary to operate specialised pollution response ships and equipment for collecting oil and other noxious substances from the sea. 

  • Puerto Rican Pollution Prevention

    Titan Maritime successfully refloated the M/V Kent Reliant at San Juan Harbour in Puerto Rico last month at the end of a 13 day salvage and response operation. The 522ft cargo ship had grounded just outside the harbour, raising fears of pollution damage to environmentally sensitive areas.

    Major British utility companies have moved to join the march towards offshore renewable energy with the Centrica Group, which owns British Gas, announcing plans to build a £100m wind farm in the Irish Sea and Powergen Renewables buying the rights to develop a £200m wind farm off the west coast of Scotland.

    Three of what were the dredging industry's Big Six companies only recently, will now operate as one, following the sale of a majority stake in Ballast Ham Dredging to its Dutch rival, the family owned dredging, offshore and marine construction Van Oord Group.

  • California Fuel Cell Boat No Longer Dreaming

    The world's first electric fuel cell water taxi powered by a hydrogen fuel system has been successfully operated in the harbour at Newport Beach, California as part of its pre-launch testing. The project, which will demonstrate the utility of hydrogen fuel in generating power for ships and port facilities, is a cooperative effort between Millennium Cell, which makes the 'Hydrogen on Demand' hydrogen fuel system, Seaworthy Systems, Duffy Electric Boat, and Anuvu Inc. 

  • Enhanced Engine Room Simulator Launched by Transas

    Transas has commercially launched the latest version of its Engine Room Simulator ERS 4000. The modified simulator features a modern design for the dedicated hardware set with new control panels and some essential improvements have been made to functionality.

    The first commercial catamaran on Cardiff's recently created 200 hectare freshwater bay will be operational before the end of this year, offering gourmet dining cruises.

    Gemini Catamaran Workboats Limited of Colchester UK has just completed its first export order. The 11m (36ft) Jueast is a displacement model built for fisherman Shane McIntyre of Waterford in Ireland and will be used by him for potting and netting from the port of Dunmore East.

    BUE Viking, operators of the largest 'standby' fleet in the North Sea, has appointed Mr Graham Philip as their new Chief Executive. Mr Philip has been associated with the offshore and towage industries for most of his career and was Managing Director of Cory Towage Ltd. At the time of its takeover by the Wijsmuller Group Holding BV he was appointed to the executive board, and when the company was acquired by the AP Moller Group in 2001 became an executive vice president in Copenhagen.

  • Ostensjo Builds Sophisticated New Escort Tug

    A new high-performance tanker-handling tug has been ordered by Norwegian tug owner Ostensjo Rederi A/S of Haugesund to operate at the Norske Hydro oil terminal at Sture. 

  • A New Tug Fleet at Marchwood

    There is a growing use of scale model tugs to aid training and simulation in shiphandling and pilotage. Southampton Institute has recently added a tug to their inventory at the Manned Model Shiphandling Facility at Marchwood. The unmanned radio controlled scale model of an ASD tug is fully functional with a scale 52-tons bollard pull. It will operate with the centre's fleet of model ships that include tankers ranging from 40,000 to 300,000 tons deadweight. 

  • Dutch Owners go for the 'New Generation' Shoalbuster

    Two well-known independent Dutch tug operators have ordered vessels to the new Damen improved design Shoalbuster 2609 design. The new version will retain all of the features that have made this shallow draft twin screw tug so popular with owners working in the dredging and marine civil engineering industries but will incorporate important improvements for seagoing operation.
