Powerful Towing Winches for UAE Tugs
01 Oct 2003
Ridderinkhof BV of the Netherlands recently supplied bespoke towing winches for the anchor handling tugs Wassay and Jabbar, built by Damen Shipyards at Gorinchem for Gulf Services Office in Abu Dhabi.
The sister ships are unusual in that almost all auxiliary systems are self powered rather than relying on drives from the main engines. Ridderinkhof's heavy duty waterfall winch on each vessel is powered by a dedicated Caterpillar 3406 C/TA diesel of 298kW via a built up torque converter and can be controlled locally or remotely from the wheelhouse. The winch has a stall load of 165 tonnes and a line pull of 85 tonnes at 10m per minute. Each of the twin drums has a brake load of 165 tonnes and will accommodate 600m of 56 mm diameter steel wire rope.
Automatic spooling devices with pneumatic operated clutches for servo hydraulic adjustment and correction of the wire guide units are placed in front of the upper towing drums. The cable guides for the anchor handling drums are servo hydraulically driven and are of the hydraulic dumping/rising vertical single-roller type. The winches were fully tested at nearly 190 tonnes dynamic pull and, complete with driving units and other accessories, weigh in at approximately 42 tonnes.
