Finnish Navy Orders Fansweep 20 Multi-beam System
01 Oct 2003
Bremen-based Atlas Hydrographic, which recently reported successful trials of its Parasound DS-2 parametric sub-bottom profiler aboard the Russian Academy of Sciences' research vessel, Akademik Boris Petrov, en route to the Kara Sea near Murmansk, has been commissioned to supply the Finnish Naval Research Institute in Helsinki with a Fansweep 20 multibeam system.
The 200kHz shallow water system is due to be installed this month aboard a new catamaran research vessel which will be used for mapping operations in association with the Geological Survey of Finland.
Combining bathymetric measuring and sidescan imaging functions, it is being supplied together with Linux-based Atlas Hydromap online data acquisition and storage facilities supported by a CARIS HIPS and SIPS software module for post-processing of datasets.
The complete assembly is also being interfaced to an autopilot and an OCTANS combined motion sensor and gyro compass.
Similar Fansweep multibeam configurations, which are capable of providing more than 10,000 high-accuracy depth values per second, are already operational with other national hydrographic services of the Australian, Chilean, French, Malaysian, New Zealand, Peruvian and UK navies.
